Family Guy: Cool Whip

Recently, I’ve received some heated comments about my latest sketch, Malk. Comments claiming I was stealing an idea from Family Guy’s Cool Whip episode. Since I’m not a big TV watcher (I don’t even have basic cable) I never really got into Family Guy, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about for myself. I just finished watching the episode online about 15 minutes ago and I must admit, I was shocked! There’s an exchange of lines between two characters in the scene that is almost identical to one in Malk. See for yourself by clicking here (watch 1:14-1:17).

I work hard to create original content and would never steal an idea, let alone an idea from a show as huge as Family Guy! I’d have to be a complete idiot to do that. That being said, I apologize to all the Family Guy fans and I assure you all, it was merely coincidence. If you have any comments/questions I hope you’ll leave them below! I love hearing from you guys!

If I remember that clip and I do believe I do-and your sketch I would think that although they may seem similar (and I do stress the seem cause I don’t think they are very alike) there are marked differences which shows that Malk is entirely your idea. *shrugs* Search me I didn’t see what the fuss was about…I loved Malk by the way it was HILARIOUS :)

  2. julian Says:

Thanks Tara! I’m glad you liked it and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts!

  3. seth ury Says:

i dont have cable either so i dont watch Family guy. Your video is so much better though!!

  4. Scott Free Says:

The things people accuse us homeschoolers of, eh, Julian? Er, well, of course you aren’t homeschooled anymore, but you get my drift.
I think any argument that you stole this from Family Guy is ungrounded–anyway, it sounds if anything more like a tribute than thievery. We know you’re better than that, Julian, don’t worry. ;)

  5. Dina Says:

don’t worry about those ppl, its not like the show invented it or anything. and plus your video is really funny so its all good.

  6. Dina Says:

… plus, i dont watch family guy

  7. Becky Says:

My (homeschooled) son and I laughed together watching Malk. Family Guy doesn’t bring us our “family entertainment” either.

  8. Stacey Says:

Me and my homeschooled kids loved Malk. They didn’t get the end with the cat in the oven and quite frankly I didn’t explain it to them :) It was funny and we were all excited to see the guy from Smash Cuts in that one (which by the way we LOVE Smash Cuts!!—we DVR it and watch as a family and are shocked, amazed and thoroughly entertained by it :)

Anyway, I watched the Family Guy clip (I have never seen that show before), and yes there was a similarity, but honestly I have had that conversation/exchange with college roommates before who had a different dialect than I. It is hardly “owned” by Family Guy. So chin up—and keep making good videos!!!

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback! It’s a relief to know that you all like it and above all, still think it’s original. The last thing I need people to think is that I’m unoriginal! :)

And Stacey, I’m glad you and your family enjoy Smash Cuts! I’m going to miss working with everyone when filming ends.

  10. Daniel Says:

Hey Julian! I am also Homeschooled! Man the Malk thing was friggin hilarious! lol! And it takes a bigger man to apologize than it does to just ignore the issue! And I respect you for that! And…I dont watch Family Guy, Were a christian family and that show is just way to vulgar! Anyways…thanks for the laughs man! Your awesome!

  11. Patrick Says:

    Yalloo.
To be honest, I absolutely adore family guy and watch it religiously. That being said, I didn’t even notice the similarities until just now. Keep being original, we need more great filmmakers like you!

  12. Danielle Says:

    I liked yours better.
    :)

  13. Colin Says:

Malk is better than this .

  14. David Says:

Being a recent fan of your videos and such, and absolutely loving family guy, i had thought up an idea about the Griffin fam going to an ethiopian restaurant, and being served a chicken that died of starvation…I think that the jokes could be endless….this may all kinda sound random, but you guys are pretty creative so who knows….

  15. Lana Says:

Nooo. Those two might be similiar but you did not rip them off. I did not even think of the two together until I read your journal entry. No worries man, you and your crew are insanely creative and I am so glad to have found your great stuff!

  16. Alice Says:

Dude, that’s pretty legit stuff you have in your videos. I wouldn’t think you’d steal from a tv show, unless it’s a parody, which is not actually stealing…
Anyway, I remember a scene also in Hot Rod where there was a similar thing going on. The whole making-fun-of-how-people-pronounce-things thing is not owned by anyone. Your fans know you’re legit. That’s all that matters.

  17. Seth Says:

It’s okay I think Family Guy took it from the movie Hot Rod when he is trying to say Whiskey.

  18. hunter Says:

could tell you put some effort into this posts so i bookmarked you at a few dozen places, thanks for the read

  19. Will C. Says:

    Julian,
I love your videos and Malk is my favorite! I know you wouldn’t purposefully rip off a sketch. Also, I can’t get enough of the phrase “I made this for you!” I can’t wait to see where you end up in 5 years. Keep it up! =]

  20. lewis B Says:

I saw cool whip before i saw malk, but when i watched malk not one thought of ‘Oh, this is very similar to cool whip.’ passed through my head.

    Haters gonna Hate i suppose.

  21. Emma Says:

    Julian

You are awesome! Malk is way better than Family Guy!

    lewis B,

    Yes. Haters gotta hate.

  22. lily Says:

i do i am 10 well sometimes i watch it but that episode was funny my mom says it like that too :)

  23. Lance Says:

I have to admit, I did recognize it when i first watched Malk. But no worries Julian!

  24. Twan Says:

Haha! Never mind them non-contributing naggers! ;)
If there’s any resemblance, it’s that both are equally funny!
    Great video

  25. Aaron Bond Says:

the part in family guy is referencing the movie Hot Rod.

  26. Jonathan Guy Says:

Wow that was similar! I have to admit though malk was WAY better. I love the cat….

  27. levi johnson Says:

    haha i never noticed that

  28. 3 Says:

And remember kids, if you ever steal from Family guy, then you’re also stealing from whoever Seth MacFarlane stole it in the first place!

  29. Sam De Cuyper Says:

    Well, What can I say.

I think I watched that family guy episode before, But not sure.. I barely watch It, Once a month maybe? Lol just when My bro’s watching and I’m bothered to join.

Anyway, On family guy , It didn’t really make me laugh at all, Compared to yours, Julian.. Malk surely made me laugh. Don’t really see much compared to It either…. Honestly, Let the haters hate, Just because you have one vid with you “stolen the idea off” (far off honestly) they have no reason to comment bad lol. every single vid you make makes me lol and enjoy, really, dont worry bout it, we all know you wont lie bout shit like this. just not your style.

  30. Cameron Says:

wow thats really similar who really cares anyway alot more better when its done with guns lol
