Me

I’m your stereotypical scatterbrained creative type. I organize my clutter, take coffee with my sugar, and often find myself speeding when I’m giving birth to a good idea on the interstate. I don’t have a real job. In fact, odds are that as you’re reading this I’m either shooting a sketch or writing a piece of music for your personal amusement in the coming week. That’s right. I do it all for you. I don’t even know you. That’s how nice I am. If you enjoy my stuff as much as I enjoy creating it for you, then what are you waiting for? A REALLY LONG, DRAWN OUT STORY ABOUT MY LIFE AS A KID…
I was that little kid in class that everyone was worried about. My pictures weren’t composed or colored the same way my friends’ were. The people I drew were purple and had noses for ears with arms that extended from their knees. In kindergarten, my teacher, Mrs. Card actually held a one on one meeting with my parents to express to them her concern that I had mental problems. My parents weren’t fazed, they knew better. They pulled my siblings and me out of public school and from then on, all six of us were home schooled. I’ve often toyed with the idea of popping an alka-seltzer and crawling back into my old classroom on a leash… you know, just to say hello.
I grew up in a very creative family. My dad was a music industry executive, so naturally I grew up playing an instrument – guitar was my weapon of choice… I began playing at age seven. It wasn’t more than a few years before I began trying to find a way to record the music I was writing. I would jerry-rig ways to record very basic tracks on the family computer… but as you could imagine, this was hardly a convenience for the ‘rents and sibs. So I took a babysitting job, saved up $1,400 and bought my first computer. Piece by piece I built a recording studio in my bedroom (ProTools for you techies). I soon discovered a little video editing application called iMovie. Now, my friends and I had been making these stupid little videos with our parents camcorders for years at this point, so I was excited that I now had a way to edit them. It didn’t take me long to realize that with these tools I could even score original music to our little episodes.
That’s right, I was invincible – I was unstoppable – I was the only fifteen year old without a driver’s permit… but I didn’t care. I was having too much fun to care. It was about that time when I got my first copy of Final Cut Pro (version 1.0, nerds – that’s right, old school). Final Cut Pro is a professional video and film editing application which a lot of big films today are spliced with. With time, I began to realize that not only were our little movies looking more and more professional, but also, every bit of the content was original, including the music! I started getting hired to make videos around town before I could even drive myself to pick up checks from my clients. I didn’t realize this was weird, I was just having fun… and not to mention getting paid for it!
Today, I’m working my way towards directing full length feature films. Until then, I’ll continue to make my living as a YouTuber and freelance director. You can stay tuned with me by subscribing here on JulianSmith.tv, and of course, my YouTube channel.
Thanks for reading!
(If you’ve come this far, congratulations… turn off your computer and go outside.)
